Inclusion to the Devolution Priority Programme

In local politics, it’s rare to have the opportunity to shape the future of local government—but yesterday, I found myself in that position. Since becoming a County Councillor, I’ve witnessed the slow pace of progress, the constant challenges of funding essential statutory services, and seen first-hand the confusion from the public about which council is responsible for what.

It’s time to focus on what’s best for the people and businesses of Suffolk. Our duty is to make tough decisions—even if those decisions lead to significant changes, such as the restructuring or even replacement of the councils we currently serve on.

I firmly believe that residents want a system that works for them. Yesterday’s decision was about taking an important step forward by voting for Suffolk’s inclusion in the Devolution Priority Programme.

In response to an invitation from ministers, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet has agreed to recommend Suffolk for inclusion in the government’s Devolution Priority Programme. This initiative could lead to the creation of a directly elected Mayor, likely covering both Suffolk and Norfolk, and the transition to a streamlined unitary council structure to replace the existing two-tier council system.

This is a pivotal moment for Suffolk—a chance to shape a modern, efficient council system that better serves our communities.
