Powering Suffolk Sustainably: Turning Waste into Energy

The Suffolk Energy-from-Waste facility continues to make a significant impact. In 2023, it processed 294,607 tonnes of waste, generating enough electricity to power 52,243 homes. Additionally, over 52,000 tonnes of bottom ash were recovered for construction, and nearly 10,000 tonnes of metal were recycled. Efficiency improvements, including a turbine gearbox upgrade and a new contractors’ village, have further enhanced operations.

Community engagement remains a priority for the facility, welcoming over 1,000 visitors last year. Its biodiversity efforts have been recognised, with rare orchids thriving on-site and a resilient peregrine falcon chick taking flight. The facility also continues to support local green initiatives and charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support and St Elizabeth Hospice.

Suffolk residents and local groups are encouraged to visit the facility and learn more about its role in waste management and energy generation. Educational tours offer insight into the energy-from-waste process and sustainability initiatives in the region. More information and booking details can be found at www.suffolkefw.co.uk.
